Elounda offers a quieter and more exclusive alternative, with hidden coves, fishing villages, and some of the island's most luxurious hotels and villas as a backdrop.

Can Norwegians legally marry in Crete?

Unlike France, Greece does not require you to reside there before you can legally marry in Crete. You will need a birth certificate with an apostille, a certificate of no impediment (celibacy certificate), a valid passport, and approved Greek translations of these documents. These must be submitted to the local registry office (Lixiarhio) at least eight days before the ceremony, but we recommend submitting them as early as three months in advance to avoid processing delays.

The civil ceremony itself usually takes place at the town hall in Heraklion or Rethymnon, is conducted in Greek, and requires two witnesses. Because the marriage is valid where it takes place, it will usually be automatically recognized in Norway when you notify the national registry afterwards.

If you prefer a simpler process with no document requirements, a symbolic ceremony is a good alternative—in this case, the legal marriage takes place in Norway, and the celebration in Crete becomes a purely ceremonial event without formalities.

Villas for rent start from around 90 euros per night and go up to 1900 euros for the most exclusive options in Elounda – making it possible to tailor the budget no matter the size of the party.
